Jobriath (Bruce Wayne Campbell) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, December 14, 1942. He was a child music prodigy. After going AWOL during a short stint in the Army, he was cast in the Los Angeles production of the musical, Hair. With the help of manager, Jerry Brandt, he signed an infamous deal with Elektra Records billed as the "American Bowie" with one big difference - he was actually gay. His over-hyped glam debut was followed by an epic fall. He resurrected his career as the lounge singer, Cole Berlin, in New York before his death from AIDS in 1983. His music inspired a next generation of artists including Ann Magnuson and Kristian Hoffman, who contributed to this issue.
